Old West Cinnamon Rolls is a true California original. Betty Clemens created the recipe over 40 years ago at the family home in Shell Beach, CA. Back then it was all about the bread. Every kid in our neighborhood would come by a few times a week asking; ‘Did your Mom make any more of that ‘Joe’ bread?’ they called it ‘Joe’ bread because Betty had used the photo of her youngest son on the label of her bag of bread mix. The label really said – “Old West HomeBaked Bread Mix” but the caption under Joe’s photo said “Joe says’s it’s the best bread I ever ate.” ‘Joe Bread’ is the name that stuck. To promote her new bread mix Betty took her portable oven and mixing bowls to the local fair and sold dinner rolls for .25¢ a piece. A few years later at the Arizona State Fair a little girl asked Betty if she could make her something sweet. Betty combined her bread dough and creativity and turned it into the first batch of ‘Fair Famous’ cinnamon rolls. [read more]

View ProfileThe Pismo Beach Chamber of Commerce is the oldest Chamber in the immediate area dating from 1922. We are a unique Chamber that is focused on the economic and lifestyle well being related to a small but successful City with a long coastline. Today, as it was long ago, Pismo Beach is a popular tourist resort. We are consistently rated as one of the 25 best beaches in California. Indeed, out of the 430 California cities that exist on TOT – or bed tax as some say – we are number 5. The success of our membership is intimately tied to the nearly 2.5 million visitors to Pismo Beach annually and therefore our retail economy thrives when our hotels and tourist trades thrive. In fact, we are the largest visitor destination in San Luis Obispo County. We are also fortunate enough to have an intimate but non-dependent relationship with our City Council and City Staff. A City Council member and at least one City Staff member participates in each of our Board meetings. We frequently brief City Staff and the City Council on what we believe our members wish to advocate. Communications are strong. This is a membership asset that no other surrounding City-Chamber relationship can offer its members. As the Pismo Beach Chamber, we therefore function as both a critical resource to the City and a strong advocate for our members. We advocate strongly on the behalf of our members as we recently demonstrated regarding ill-advised placement of public restrooms adjacent to high quality tourist hotels and restaurants. Each City in the area has a unique set of characteristics and issues and therefore each Chamber of Commerce must represent what is best for the businesses of each City. Please contact us if you are interested in becoming a member, or apply online here. [read more]

View ProfileThe San Luis Obispo Children's Museum first opened its doors in 1990 after the property was donated to the City of San Luis Obispo and the building converted from a transmission shop. The Children's Museum’s first incarnation lasted 14 years but the building had many structural and logistical problems, and the facility often reached capacity on busy days. From 2005-2008 the Museum was closed for reconstruction and over $5 million was raised to create a world class facility. The Museum reopened the second and third floors in June 2008. In June of 2009, the first floor was reopened and the Museum was officially completed. Close to 50,000 guests now visit the San Luis Obispo Children’s Museum each year, many on class field trips. The Museum is fortunate to have many community partners such as the Community Foundation San Luis Obispo and Cal Poly. The Children's Museum is a 501(c)(3) California non-profit organization and is led by a volunteer board of directors. It is a goal of the board for the Museum to be accessible to as many children as possible, and a resource for other community organizations. [read more]
